takeaways

Casual Approach to Learning

People tend to see language learning apps more as a fun activity rather than a serious endeavor. They view vocabulary learning as a tool to casually engage with the language.

Streaks Can Be Demotivating

Users who haven't built up a significant streak feel that the streak feature can actually be demotivating rather than encouraging.

Challenges of Consistency

Users often forget or find it challenging to allocate time every day for learning, despite their best intentions.

Impact of Losing Streaks

Users who have built up long streaks on Duolingo admit that losing a streak, even once, can significantly demotivate them.

Motivation through Real-life Application

Participants believe that learning a language in contexts relevant to real-life situations would be more motivating.

Possible solution

Storytelling

Stories engage with multiple areas of the brain, making stories more memorable than simple facts.
  • Users choose topics they're interested in, presented in conversations to keep them curious and motivated for real-life discussions.
  • Each lesson follows a captivating storyline to encourage users to return for the next lesson
  • Users can grasp the subtle nuances of words as they learn

Temptation Bundling

You’re more likely to find a behavior attractive if you get to do one of your favorite things at the same time.

What I've learned

Learning
Encouraging motivation heavily relies on emotions. I learned to integrate psychology into features for this purpose.
What I could have done better
I aim to research preferred languages for learning and explore the relationship between users' native language and their desired language to enhance learning efficiency.
